Despite a reported "handful" of parties interested in buying the Rocky Mountain News, the Denver Newspaper Agency, the Denver Post and MediaNews Group Inc. continued to move forward in an effort to reopen union contracts in order to obtain $20 million in concessions. The agency, which is 50 percent owned by the Rocky's proprietor, The E.W. Scripps Co., and 50 percent owned by the Post's parent, MediaNews Group, sent a letter to Denver union letters last Monday indicating that they and the companies have until Jan. 16 to cut new deals so that MediaNews can renegotiate up to $130 million in loans.
